It's almost Martin Luther King day! I can't think of a better time for a lesson on acceptance, love and perseverance. I am a big fan of Faith Ringgold's My Dream of Martin Luther King (Dragonfly Books). The lovely, abstract art work paints a vivid picture of King's life, from infancy, all the way to his tragic death through a boy's dream. The pictures and words in the story offer ample opportunities for the discussion about just what King's dream was all about and also gives us insight into the personality traits needed to be successful, helpful citizens. It's not about how you look on the outside. It's what's on the inside that counts. Lesson Plans/Activities:
1. If you want to get to know me, look on the inside...Take two boy or girl patterns and draw a picture of yourself. Don't forget the back of yourself! Then take lined pieces of paper and write about who you are on the inside. Write about special character traits or interests. Don't write about physical characteristics. Cut out all papers and put your lined paper between your boy or girl pictures. Staple them together and invite your friends and family to take a look at the things that really matter!
2. Have your students write about a dream for the world. Then have them write three things that they can do to help make their dream come true. Write them in clouds, and glue them above pictures of themselves.
